Requirements gathering and user research are essential techniques used to scope a project and find the meaningful overlap between business and user need. But shouldn't they be fun as well as fruitful? Our Iron Unicorn program combines a little bit of Who’s Line is it Anyway and Iron Chef to demonstrate behavioral tools, rhetorical tricks, and creative ways to elicit rather than gather requirements to get the best results. All in a game show format.
We start each episode of Iron Unicorn by soliciting brand, project, and target audience ideas from attendees, then mix them up to create a unique challenge: A McDonalds dating site for the elderly? An Iron Man biometrics platform for bronies? The more absurd and fun, the better. Then we pull volunteers from the crowd to serve as stakeholders and users and run them through a requirements session and user interviews before finally splitting the audience into teams and giving them an hour to create and pitch solutions to the program's challenge. Oh, and we stick them with a surprise secret requirement. Stakeholder and user volunteers then choose a winning team based on their ability to identify the sweet spot between the business requirements and user needs, whether or not their solution is on brand, and their concept’s novelty.
J+E's Unicorn Feud program turns the journey map and user research process on its head by combining a little bit of Family Feud, a little bit of Clue, and a lot of fun to practice techniques for uncovering the interactions that help your customers succeed and the best efforts that help you encourage them. In doing, the creation and utility of journey maps are revealed—the intersection of user data, behavioral stages, touch-points, decision-making, and sentiment that takes the guesswork out of customer motivation.
Participants are tasked with a challenge outside their comfort zone: Using real user research—revealed gradually and with many surprising insights through a Family Feud-style interface—and a real product customer journey map to find the most creative and inventive way to engage a target persona and convert them into a user or customer.
A creative spin on Shark Tank. Because whatever you do—design, code, manage, or lead—at some point we all have to pitch. It might be new business, it might be a new idea, it might even be ourselves. But getting someone else to buy into our ideas isn't as simple as showing them how great—or even how affordable—it might be. There's a science and a technique to it. Our Narwhal Tank program uses this prompt as an opprtunity to practice using neuroscience and storytelling to pitch effectively and quickly. Bringing their own ideas or creating one with us, attendees practice building and presenting their perfect pitch to a panel of judges, drawing lessons from Oren Klaff's Pitch Anything to frame our their story and maintain suspense.
